Sport

Sport is one of the key recreational areas in the Short Course forming an important part of the scheduled program, and is also a popular leisure activity to which students sometimes turn during precious free time. Its value lies beyond its often competitive nature, and plays an important part in the development of leadership, teamwork and co-operation. Basketball is of course a global game but those who have been to the Lithuanian Short Course will tell you that nowhere is it quite as popular as Lithuania. Basketball courts are to be found even in the most remote and disadvantaged areas, and from small tournaments within the Short Course to competitive matches against local teams, basketball has proved both a stimulating and relaxing activity on the Short Course. Football has perhaps not held the same status as basketball on many Short Courses and the fact that it has lacked the same level of expertise amongst the participants as basketball has been of great benefit to all creating a level playing field in which the emphasis mainly on fun. A number of matches against local teams have however also taken place, and while never an elegant spectacle have been worthwhile exercises producing scorelines which in the words of James Mendelssohn - one of the many Short Course tutors - 'were close and diplomatically excusable' Swimming is probably the most popular of recreational activities on the Short Course. Most courses have never been far from water, whether a swimming pool in Turkey, a small lake in Lithuania or the islands of Malta and Cyprus water has always been a focal point for fun!
